With Guest Speaker, Asian Law Caucus Attorney SHIRIN SINNAR.
SHIRIN SINNAR is a staff attorney with the Asian Law Caucus, where she works on racial and ethnic profiling, employment discrimination, and other civil rights and workers' rights issues with a particular focus on the South Asian community. She is a graduate of Stanford Law School, Cambridge University (M.Phil. in International Relations), and Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges (A.B. in History). Her article, "Patriotic or Unconstitutional? The Mandatory Detention of Aliens under the USA Patriot Act," appeared in the Stanford Law Review in 2003. Prior to joining the Caucus, she served as an Equal Justice Works fellow with the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area on post-9/11 discrimination by employers, financial institutions, and other private businesses.

ASAPA 1st General Meeting @ 287 Dwinelle

The First meeting was a success. The meeting covered ASAPA's motto, past events and introduction of council members. After individuals learned of the ultimate awesomeness of South Asian poltical awareness, new members were able to sign-up for work groups to help faciliate events in three major categories this year for ASAPA: (1) Women Empowerment, (2) Inter-Religious Unity, and (3) Environmental Justice. ASAPA’s past events include lectures and film screenings aimed at promoting discussion and debate on various topics relevant to the South Asian community. Some highlights include Dr. Stephen Cohen speaking on “India, Pakistan, and Kashmir in the 21st Century,” Dr. Priyavadan Patel on “Elections and Violence in Gujarat,” as well as prominent author Amitava Kumar discussing “Half-Faith, or a Writer’s Response to Fundamentalism.”
